Lent Series: 40 days to End Violence Against Women: Week 4 Uzbekistan

March 9, 2010

Dear Friends,

As we enter the fourth week of Lent, this study course – Cries of Anguish, Stories of Hope: A Lenten Study on the worldwide struggle to end Violence Against Women – takes a small glimpse at the global issue of human trafficking. (http://women.overcomingviolence.org)

You can use the online resources as they suit you best – on your own, or with a group from your church or area. We suggest you watch the film first.  We have clip from Al Jazeera English that gives us “Svetlana’s Story”  Svetlana is a woman from the Ukraine, who was trafficked to Dubai. Her story is not unique.  The Uzbek government estimates that around 1000 Uzbek women are illegally trafficked from their country each year, mainly to Turkey or the United Arab Emirates.  The number of people trafficked is unknown, but estimates range from 500,000 to 4 million people trafficked across borders every year.

We also have a Bible Study from Dr Fulata Moyo, looking at the book of Ruth through the lens of trafficked women, discussion questions, an interactive reflection page and prayers that relate to the video.

We have provided some links to local support services, in case you or someone in your group finds this study raises issues for them which require professional support.

During this time of reflection and introspection we pray that our videos and studies will be a starting point for you. Thank you for sharing this time with us.  The issue of trafficked women is one that touches everyone around the globe.  We pray as we learn more about this issue we will be able to see what we can do individually to address this pressing issue.

This study has been designed by the World Council of Churches, the World Student Christian Federation and the World YWCA. We look forward to accompanying you during your Lenten journey.
