A Message from President Newell Williams and Dean Michael Miller

October 17, 2019

We have been made aware of a powerful article by Professor Wil Gafney that can be found at the following link https://www.nbcnews.com/think. This article, which highlights the experience of unsafety by Black people in Fort Worth and across the nation, reminds us of the ways features of contemporary life in America have intensified the experience of unsafety members of different constituencies at Brite are experiencing at this time.

We must remain attentive to and supportive of those who are pursuing change in how policing is carried out in our city, especially the impacts on communities and persons of color.

We also need to be acutely aware of dangerous events occurring beneath the radar. For example, “the same judge who ruled last year that Obamacare was unconstitutional has overturned protections for transgender patients, asserting that the guidelines infringed on the religious freedoms of Christian health care providers (See: https://www.newsweek.com/federal-judge-overturns-obamacare-…).”

Let’s keep working at ways the Brite community might grow in our capacity to care for and stand with each other, as together we pursue the demands of inclusive justice.
