Reading Women in the Gospels Reading Women in the Gospels
April 30, 2011The Fifth Fred B. Craddock Seminar on the Gospels
Cynthia Kittredge Ernest J. Villavaso, Jr. Professor of New Testament and Academic Dean, Seminary of the Southwest
Women’s authority and leadership continue to be con- tested in society and in the church. The Gospels and literature outside the canon give insight into these de- bates in the early church. The stories give intriguing glimpses of the activity of women in the communities, and at the same time they construct particular under- standings of gender, the relationship of women and men, proper and improper female behavior, and the role of Jesus in the community. We will investigate how gender and authority interact in the four Gospels and explore the implications of different interpretive strategies.
